Searching For A Sumptuous Repast…

     For a very long time now, I have NOT felt inspired to keep up this blog. Oh, my husband continues to routinely encourage me to take it up again, saying “God has given you a voice. You have much to say. You would be much happier and healthier, if you let the words out.” But I obstinately held out, responding, “Who would care what I, a retired Naval Officer, living a quiet life, has to say? Just another would-be influencer on a social media soap box.” Maybe.

     Spiritual food can be found in many forms. According to Anglicans, which I proudly admit that I am now one, the Eucharist is the optime of spiritual food, which is true. Not the transubstantiation kind of Eucharist, but the mystery of the presence of Christ kind of cuisine. (What’s that you say, Theology right off the bat?)

     Well, for these purposes, I will be using the broad biblical definition of spiritual food which are the things that feed and nourish the soul. Spiritual food is the activity that centers us with meaning, cultivates hope, fortifies resilience, and brings us sustenance that alleviates fear. I want some of that and so do you, if you admit it. Our diet has not been so great of late.

     The Bible has a lot to say about spiritual food. Oh, I don’t mean the food in the wilderness, that is, the manna that God brought a starving people. I am referring to Jesus’ definition, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).” It is this form of spiritual food that I bring to the table. It is the nourishment that we need now more than ever. For we too are starving people. We do not know how to eat a healthy diet or food that is good for us. We will explore together the spiritual table that God so lavishly has set before us and partake of His goodness.
