Arab Spring, Facebook & Ramadan
As a result of the Arab Spring, Arabs across the Middle East are using social media more than ever before. On average they have over 100 friends, they are fans of 20 pages, and upload 444 pictures on Facebook. Of the people that are online in the Middle East, 88 percent use social media daily.
One Follower of Jesus met two girls at a race and instead of asking for her number the girls asked to be friends on Facebook. By accepting their friendship the Jesus Follower has remained connected to these girls and has numerous opportunities to share the Truth not only with them, but also their friends.
The observance of Ramadan includes every part of the body, probably best described by the Arabic word for fasting, sawm, which means ‘to refrain’. This includes not looking at unlawful (haram) things, not uttering harsh words or backbiting, not listening to idle gossip and not allowing yourself to visit illicit places. During this period, the complete overhaul of the usual way of life is intended to educate and purify the soul in a reaffirmation of the word ‘Muslim’ – a term that translates as ‘one who submits to the will of Allah’. With fasting having been ordained by God in the Qur’an, the adherence to the ritual is an act of obedience.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it” (Mat 13: 44-46).
